My FRONT heat shield has rusted and causes the rattle-the REAR heat shield is still holding tightly. Our 2006 Odyssey LX with 145,000 miles had this problem and I discovered the cause yesterday (Saturday). A flexible drive extension and finger grip adapter greatly helps!īrewmasterthis: Thank you very much for your clear information and diagrams concerning this noise. The rear heat shields were another story and took me 20 minutes of contortions to tighten the clamp. Contrary to what others have said, I found the front heat shields relatively easy to tighten a hose clamp around. The goal is to clamp each half against the other half to stop them from rattling. Slide under the engine and get a hose clamp around each cylindrical heat shield. View attachment 82425 View attachment 82433 The cylinder circled in red are the rear heat shields and the one circled in green are the front heat shields. You will need to jack up and block the van safely! All work must be done from below as there is no way to reach these from above.įor reference, see the diagrams below. One is at the front, right next to the fan, and the other at the rear of the engine and almost hidden from view. They are mounted vertically near the bottom of the V6 engine. ![]() To fix the heat shields you first have to find them. Instead I did what many others have recommended and tightened 6 inch stainless steel hose clamps around each one and the rattling is completely gone. The Honda dealership wanted $1100 (!) saying it was all due to labor since most of the exhaust system would have to come off to get at the shields. In my case, it was the heat shields around the 2 primary converters that were rusted and intermittently rattling during acceleration. The TSB some people mention pertains to the secondary converter. Two primary converters (attached directly to the front and rear exhaust manifolds) and a secondary converter under the floorboards (that feeds to the muffler). There are 3 catalytic converters in the 2007 model. Hopefully this will clear up some of the confusion. I have a 2007 Odyssey with 195K miles and had to silence the rattling ($5 parts, $50 diagnosis). I know this is a 3 year old post but there is a lot of incomplete and misleading information about rattling heat shields being thrown around so I'm sharing what I recently learned. None of the work made a difference, which is disheartening because the dealer pointed at the same bulletin, and I was hoping that this would have been the cause for the noise.Ĭan anyone tell me if there are other heat shields that could be causing the noise? Rather than the "intermediate heat shield"? I checked underneath on the heat shield, and after mounting the clamps, there's really no jiggle, loose rattling. ![]() ![]() After quite a bit of time underneath the car, I successfully got all three bolts secured with the clamps.īut, after taking it out for a test drive, I still notice the same scratching noise at around 2100RPMs. Went to Autozone and bought the stainless steel hose clamps. Well, I climbed underneath my '06 Odyssey with 73K miles. I have searched through the forum for "heat shield" and also look at the pictures provided by this post: Can anyone tell me what, other than the intermediate heat shield, could be causing the noise?
